The photo series "We shall both live” focuses on gender identity and self-expression. The story is about understanding one's gender, coming to terms with it, the effects of the environment and the journey to self-recognition. The gender identity of the main character of the series and its acceptance are greatly influenced by the culture where he grew up. He is from Iraq, the country and the people are heavily influenced by the religion and culture there. He began to think more about issues of gender identity in his teenage years, but because of the attitudes around him, it caused him fear and shame. These deeply rooted feelings have remained with him until now, he has lived in Estonia for 4 years and although these topics are more accepted here, this environment is not very tolerant. Living here, he also has to endure racism, and the idea of full self-expression is terrifying because it puts him in an even more vulnerable position. The question arises as to where and when he can finally feel like himself, how much his power plays a part in this and how much is influenced by the environment around him.
